Call to Honour Local Football Club

There are suggestions that civic recognition should be given to the Borough's soccer team (Hampton and Richmond) - based in Hampton - after it won promotion for the first time from the Rymans League to the second tier of non-league football (one below the Nationwide Conference).

Vincent Cable MP said: "Twickenham is a rugby Mecca with the RFU and Harlequins, a top flight Union and League club. But the local soccer team has achieved a great deal in the world of non-league football and deserves some recognition.

"As it moves into a higher league, there will be bigger crowds and more visiting support and it is important that there is effective cooperation with the police and the local community to ensure that there is no repetition of the incidents when Wimbledon fans came to Hampton recently."
